CHAPTER TEN … I can do it myself

Early morning found Joanna sleeping curled in the shelter of Ellie’s arms. Neither woman heard the back door open or saw Marge slip into the room to check on Danny. She found Danny was awake, sucking his thumb and playing with the blue intercom. She picked him up on her way to the kitchen to fix breakfast. As Marge passed the living room, she saw the two women sound asleep by the fireplace and realized what had happened. She quietly dressed Danny and left a note for Ellie and Joanna.

“Come on, Danny. Let’s get breakfast at Mc Donald’s. Then we’re going shopping.”

“Danny hungi, Danny hungi,” the little boy happily sing-songed on the way to the drive-in restaurant. “We going to McDonald’s. Going to McDonald’s. Yay, yay,” he shouted and clapped from the backseat as they drove thru and ordered breakfast.

They parked in the nearly empty lot behind Polsky’s Department Store and ate three Egg McMuffin sandwiches, then drank the milk and coffee as they waited for the store to open. At nine fifty-nine, Marge and Danny strolled through the store, searching for the children’s department and the toy section. They found the children’s section.

Marge dressed Danny in several outfits that looked cute, according to the sales clerk. She decided to buy them and several pairs of flannel-lined jeans in bright colors with flannel shirts to match. “Hi, Marge, and who’s this little man with you, as if I didn’t know?” Cleo bent down to pinch a chubby brown cheek and then kissed the little boy’s forehead. "Aren’t you

cute today? Hello, Danny."

Danny looked up and grinned, then hid behind Marge’s leg. He peeked out periodically to view the petite woman smiling at him.

“Danny, say hello to Miss Cleo.” Marge reached down to turn the little boy to face her friend and then patted his back. “Say, hello to Miss Cleo. Go on, Danny, and be a good boy. You remember her. She takes care of you in Ellie’s office.”

“Low, Miss Leo,” Danny said shyly as he looked up at her and then pushed his face into Marge’s pant leg again.

Cleo laughed at his mispronunciation of her name. She loved how he said it. “Close enough. He’s just as precious as he can be, Marge. I see you two have been shopping.” She nodded at the packages filling the backseat of the Mustang.

“We bought a few things that he needed,” Marge said innocently.

Cleo chuckled, then said, “You bought only a few things, Margie?”

Sharing her friend’s laughter, Marge responded, “Can I help if the boy looked good in everything he tried on? Are you
